It really depends on how much planning you want to do versus being able to sit back and let others be responsible for showing you our city. The red line metro rail is also at the corner and heads into downtown L.A. The Metro Rapid 704 bus pulls up at the corner and heads west through many areas including Beverly Hills and lands in Santa Monica. The hotel is ideally-suited for the sites you're interested in seeing. In the evenings, there's not much open adjacent to the hotel in the way of shops or restaurants but there are nearby districts (central Hollywood - a 5-minute metro rail ride away) or Los Feliz (a 2-minute metro rail ride away) that have these things. It's not that Hollywood is 'run down' it's that most of the buildings along the Walk of Fame are bland, tan office buildings from the 1920s and 30s. The Hollywood & Highland Center Mall is the only decent shopping option in the district but there are better options elsewhere in the city. Along the Walk of Fame, the shopping is surprisingly ordinary and uninteresting. Visitors to Hollywood are often surprised because they are expecting to see luxury automobiles and upmarket shops but celebs don't live in Hollywood (they did 50+ years ago) and the district, today, is a low to middle-class neighborhood. In the future, post in the "Los Angeles Forum" if you have questions about Hollywood. Meanwhile, 'West Hollywood" is a tiny city that is adjacent to Hollywood.
